Mosaic substrates & finished art
Christchurch, NZ
Step into Hephaestus — Theophora's forge of hand-cut mosaic substrates (the bases you build a mosaic on) and finished mosaic art, made in Christchurch for anyone who works with their hands. Every design comes two ways: fall for a finished piece and take it home as it is, or buy the very same substrate beneath it and make your own. You simply choose which end of the process to start from.
Anticipated Opening | October 2026.
Hephaestus (Ἥφαιστος) is the maker among the Greek gods — lord of fire and the forge, patron of smiths, sculptors, masons, and every craftsperson who turns raw material into something new.
That is the spirit this brand carries: not the god of power, nor the god of beauty, but the god of the worked thing — the one who proved that what you make with your hands can outshine anything you were merely given. In Athens his temple still stands above the Agora, looking down over the marketplace where makers once met to trade. We like to think a little of that watches over ours.
Cut into shapes and designs, prepared to live outdoors, ready for your own mosaic art.
Anticipated release | October 2026
One-off pieces, complete and ready to hang. See one you love? Buy the same substrate and make your own.
Anticipated release | 2027
Sneak peek of what's coming!
Throughout the year we take our stalls to markets around Christchurch and Selwyn. Each market features one primary brand from the Theophora family — so you might find Hephaestus's mosaic substrates and finished art pieces at one, depending on the season.
Hephaestus is the forge — but it's one door among many in the Theophora family. If you like making things by hand, you'll likely feel at home here too.
Our living permaculture garden, where the home extends into the soil — habitat planting and the slow work of shaping a space with intention.
For the threads someone else began — unfinished cross-stitch heirlooms, taken up and stitched through to completion.
Every product that leaves this studio passes through the hands of a small, dedicated team.
Exterior-grade from the start — every substrate is cut from exterior-grade plywood and prepared by hand for outdoor use.
Two ways to own it — finished as art, or bare as a substrate for your own making.
The hard part is done — the sourcing, the cutting, the prep — so you meet the material ready to create, not ready to give up.
In an era of the flat-packed and the disposable, we offer the made. Every substrate is cut, shaped, and prepared by hand, so that what enters your home — or hangs on your gate — carries durability, intention, and the mark of a maker. We do not simply supply materials; we prepare them with care, so the making starts already halfway home.
